Recently, we received “Eli the High Priest” from Egbert Modderman, a large painting (150x200cm), depicting Eli sitting upright in his bed.
Eli is worried; he was earlier warned by a man of God: “Why do you honor your sons more than me..?“ “..those who dispise me will be disdained.” (1 Samuel 2:29-30)
In 1 Samuel 3, we read that God calls Samuel three times. Every time Samuel rushes to Eli. “Hineni (Here I am), you called me!” The third time, Eli realized that it was God calling Samuel and said, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”
The next morning Samuel told Eli everything that God revealed to him. Then Eli said; “He is the Lord, let him do what is good in his eyes.”
